The FIT Community
The saying "it takes a village to raise a child" is so true for people who have dementia, their family members and other caregivers. My father, Jim Garibaldi, had Alzheimer's disease. Our family knows first-hand how valuable it is to have a community of people who understand what you are going through and are there to support you.
One chilly day my father, who no longer was able to find his way, slipped away from the house. A woman about ten blocks away saw him walking and was concerned because he didn't have on a jacket and looked disoriented. Her mother, who was deceased at that point, had Alzheimer's, so my father's disoriented look rang a bell for her. She approached him with a smile and asked if he needed any help. He was wearing a special bracelet with our phone number which she immediately called. To this day, many years later, we are still so grateful and touched that a person we didn't know reached out to help.
We learned there are no 'strangers' in the dementia community and that there are many people willing to help. The FIT Community is a virtual place to share your stories, get ideas, and feel connected to others who also have someone in their lives with dementia.
